Judie Komraus
Carver / Sculpture
Judie Komraus is a self-taught artist specializing in wood sculpture, carving birds and their natural surroundings. All her birds are carved with power tools from Tupelo wood which is also known as Sweetgum. This tree grows in the swamps of Mississippi and Louisiana. Unlike basswood it is almost grain free and does not fuzz up when texturing. It is also strong enough to allow the artist to carve very thin pieces such as tail feathers, leaves and flowers.
Songbird carvings take approximately eighty to one hundred, twenty hours to complete. Ducks and larger bird carvings can take up to four hundred hours. After completing the carved wood sculpture they are hand painted with acrylics or oils. Painting is what brings the piece to life and often consumes as much time as sculpting.
Among other awards, Judie was recipient of the Watershed Award in the 2008 Juried Christmas Exhibition sponsored by the Watershed Art Project in Grayling, Michigan.
